Overview

This safari isn’t just about seeing the land, it’s about feeling it.

Riding alongside elephants and giraffes, you’ll move not as an observer, but as part of the rhythm of the land itself. Each day brings a new revelation, from ancient Maasai trails to the silent watch of Kilimanjaro.

By journey’s end, you won’t just remember the places – you’ll carry something of their spirit with you.

🦒 Highlights
  • Ride with elephants, giraffes, and buffalo across some of East Africa’s most untamed landscapes.
  • Witness sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru from remote highland trails.
  • Meet the Maasai and experience life shaped by generations of harmony with the land.
  • Follow the old paths of Margarete Trappe, the “Iron Lady” of Tanzania, where legend and wilderness meet.
  • End each day with sundowners by the fire, under stars so vast they silence everything but the wild.

Departure & Return Location

Kilimanjaro International Airport

Accommodation

  • Lodge – 1 night
  • Mobile camp – 6nights
Itinerary

Please be aware of that the itinerary is subject to change due to movement of game and whether conditions. The routes are designed for the best possibilities of viewing wildlife and follow suitable terrain for horses. If the itinerary would change prior to the safari, this would only be for the safety and to the benefit of the journey on horseback.

Day 1

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will be met by your driver.
The drive to the lodge takes about 40 minutes. Your first night will be spent at a lodge located on a stunning estate with golf, polo, and wildlife.
Meet with the rest of the group (unless it’s a private safari), followed by a sundowner and dinner hosted by one of the safari guides.
If a polo match is happening, you’ll enjoy the sundowner at the polo club for a truly unique experience.

Day 2

Wake-up calls with tea and coffee, and breakfast is served anytime from the early hours.
After breakfast, enjoy a scenic 30-minute drive to the Arusha National Park gate.
Upon arrival, the horses will be ready for you to mount, and shortly after, you’ll ride into one of East Africa’s most beautiful parks.

As you explore, the vegetation dramatically shifts from open grassland to lush rainforest.
There are good chances of spotting buffalo, giraffes, and other plains game. Elephants and leopards also roam here, though they can be more elusive, along with rare species such as the Suni, Red Duiker, Hartlaub’s turaco, and the striking colobus monkeys.

The experience is magical as you enter the towering canopy forests. The dense rainforest hums with unseen life, the air thick with the scent of earth and rain.
As your horse steps forward, you become part of this world. The feeling is both humbling and exhilarating – it’s entering a place where nature feels vast and sacred, as if the land itself were a great, open-air cathedral.

Lunch will be set en route, with time for a short siesta.
The ride continues through leopard country, and as we approach the night’s stop, you will pass by the legendary Margarete Trappe’s old house.
Known as the ‘Iron Lady’ of World War I, her stories of adventure on horseback are a significant part of the history that this safari follows.
Arrive at camp, nestled at the foot of Mt. Meru, just in time for showers, sundowners, and a starlit dinner.

Day 3

This morning, you’ll hopefully wake up to the lively chatter of the Colobus monkeys.
After breakfast, you’ll mount your horse and begin the day’s journey towards the iconic area where the film Hatari starring John Wayne was shot.
Mid-morning, the ride takes you on a climb—part on horseback and part on foot—towards a viewpoint that, on a clear day, offers one of the best views of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Here, you’ll dismount and transfer to a vehicle to tackle the final, steepest section of the ascent.

The drive passes through the impressive “Fig Tree Arch,” a massive natural formation, before reaching a picturesque lunch spot by a waterfall at around 2,000 meters above sea level.
After lunch, you’ll return to the horses and ride back to camp.
Later, there will be an option to take a vehicle to visit the nearby Momella Lakes, with the hope of spotting hippos and some of the area’s beautiful water birds.
Sundowners will be enjoyed at the lakes, followed by showers and a relaxing dinner back at camp.

Day 4

Wake up with the sun and enjoy a hearty breakfast.
This morning, you’ll set off in vehicles for a drive out of Arusha National Park, which takes about 2½ hours heading east toward Mount Kilimanjaro, with Mount Meru fading behind like a shadow.
Later in the morning, you’ll find the horses waiting for you in the bush, having been transported there the night before.

The ride takes you through Tanzanian farmlands and the Maasai steppe, offering scenic views and rich cultural interactions along the way.
We’ll aim to cover as much ground as possible before stopping for lunch under a large acacia tree, often near a dam where the Maasai water their cattle, and we refresh our horses.
You’ll have a long stop for lunch, with about three hours to enjoy a siesta and recharge.
The afternoon ride continues across open plains, making sure to reach our next camp before the sun sets on the horizon.

Day 5

Wake-up calls are followed by a traditional English breakfast.
Today is another moving day, and after breakfast, you’ll mount your horse and set off toward the Kenyan border.
The ride takes you over the seven hills, also known as the Seven Sisters, before stopping for lunch under the shade of a tree.

With each mile, the land transforms – not just in sight, but in feeling. The open plains, where wildebeests carve paths in their migrations, give way to forests dense with silence. Here, the scent of acacia lingers in the air, mingling with the dust kicked up by your horse’s hooves. Every track in the earth, every shadow among the trees, holds the story of life and survival. You are no longer just a traveler; you are a moving part of this ancient, untamed land.

As you ride, there are good chances of seeing plains game like zebras, giraffes, elephants, and wildebeests, but we’ll also be on the lookout for the elusive Gerenuk, a shy antelope species.
The day ends at a new camp location, and if the night sky is clear, you’ll experience the breathtaking view of four towering mountains—Mt. Meru, Namanga, Longido, and the legendary Mt. Kilimanjaro—seemingly watching over you.

Day 6

Wake up early to coffee and tea before breakfast is served.
The day may be spent tracking the largest land mammal—the elephant—or navigating around trees they have knocked down.
The terrain will vary from scrublands to acacia woodlands and dry lake beds.
We’ll return to camp for lunch and head out for another ride in the afternoon.
As the sun begins to set, we’ll make our way back to camp to enjoy another peaceful night in this remote and remarkable part of the world.

Day 7

Wake up with the sunrise for the final full day of riding.
We’ll make the most of it by exploring the area, with the hope of tracking and spotting lions, elephants, and perhaps even the elusive lesser kudu.
The night will be spent at the same camp, overlooking the pans where plains game remain ever-vigilant for predators.
If the skies are clear, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of both the surrounding mountains and the awe-inspiring night sky.

Day 8

The final morning has arrived, marking the end of your safari.
Enjoy a hearty breakfast before we begin the approximately 3-hour journey back to the airport, depending on road conditions.
If you have a late flight and would like to book a day room, please let us know in advance so we can arrange it for you.
